Using sails to create friction
it is possible to store energy in the atmosphere around an urban area, a volcano or some other mountain. The convection current created by the area is how the energy normally leaves the area, so the friction of the sails transfers the energy of motion back into heat, and upstream. Given enough stored energy there would be a combustion at the focal point of convection. this energy source of the second sun, and the thermal energy of the volcano pompeii eventually heat the area between the two energy sources (pompeii itself) until the volcano pops. the citizens of pompeii were aware of this possibility, but were under seige at the time, and needed to maintain their sail network in order to defend themselves.
